Getting to the start (Part 4)
New York (Manhattan), NY • 2026-08-08
I slept horribly last night, for a whole host of reasons, one big and unexpected one being how cold the train car got.
The scenery was fairly unremarkable for most of the day. We were in upstate New York by the time most people had roused. In Albany the train splits with half going on to Boston and half to New York City, so we got to sit around the station while that was sorted out.
After the split, the Hudson River Valley was beautiful. A short-lived but intense rainfall had downed a tree which delayed us slightly.
I’m staying with my friend Sasha while I’m in New York, and they were going out to dinner with some friends tonight, so I met them there (somewhat late). There was no way for me to leave the bike or most of the bags at the station, so I walked the bike to the restaurant (a mercifully short trip), locked it up nearby and awkwardly carried most of my bags into the restaurant. The staff very graciously let me set them down in a nook in the back in spite of my chaotic and travel-worn appearance.
After meeting Sasha’s friends and enjoying the second half of a Korean barbecue meal, we went and got frozen yogurt in slightly excessive amounts. Sasha and I went back to Penn Station so I could get the one bag I did manage to drop off, and somehow or another we navigated the bike through the subway and back to their current apartment in West Harlem.
